If you have the slightest bit of inkling towards jazz, jazz fusion or bossa nova music, there is a good chance that you’ve heard of Esperanza Spalding. If not, then you owe it to your jazz-loving self to check out one of the most promising jazz artists in recent memory. Esperanza Spalding is a living proof of solid and real comprehensive musician ship. Fans of jazz, jazz fusion, bossa nova and neo soul will have a lot to like about Believe Esperanza.

Yours truly believes that Esperanza Spalding might just be one of the greatest jazz composers of our time. Here are my top reasons why:

She’s a music prodigy – like all great artists and composers, Esperanza Spalding had a gift of music and it was apparent while she was still at a young age. During the age of five, she was already playing the violin at the Chamber Music Society of Oregon. At a later age, she was both self-taught and trained to play multiple instruments like the bass and guitar. Although, she doesn’t really consider herself to be a prodigy.

She can play many instruments – and that includes guitar, violin, bass guitar, cello and the double bass. All her life, she was mastering all these instruments and even played the oboe and clarinet before. This just goes to show that she’s a multi-talented person. And speaking of multi-talents…

She is a terrific singer – as quoted by the NPR, “There are many gifted singers in jazz today, and no shortage of accomplished acoustic bass players. But few jazz artists can be both.” This perfectly describes just how much of a complete package Esperanza Spalding is. Not only she is an accomplished musician, she is also a terrific singer. She is like an exotic hybrid of both ends. Her voice just perfectly complements jazz and bossa nova music.

She’s an accomplished composer – as if she couldn’t get any better, Esperanza Spalding is also an excellent composer. Her music touches on many musical genres like jazz, classical chamber, R&B and Brazilian music.

She’s a Grammy Award winner – back in the 2011 Grammy Awards, one of the biggest upsets in the history of the award-giving body happened. Esperanza Spalding has been named the Best New Artist during the Grammy Awards, against other more popular artists like Justin Bieber and Drake. This marked the day that a jazz artist has won a Grammy.
